Although most InterTracker functions are quite intuitive, the options you are presented with may seem a bit daunting at first.
That is the reason for this 'Primer'
The very first thing you want to do is to place the InterTracker code on your main page (I'll explain why later).
I have to assume that you know how to edit the pages for your website. If you can't do this, stop now and get your webmaster
to do it for you.
How to start tracking
Step 1
Click on 'Your Code' (not on this page - you're in help mode right now)
You will see short instructions on how to copy and paste the code into your webpages.
The 'Standard Tracking Code' is probably your best option for the moment, so click on 'Select All' just underneath the first white box (this contains the code you need to use)
You will see that all the text in the white box is now highlighted.
Right click on the highlighted text (click your right mouse button while your pointer is over the highlighted text)
A box will popup with different options in it. Click on the option 'Copy'
Now you have copied the code you need to insert into your page
Step 2
Open the webpage editor you use to edit your pages.
It doesn't matter what editor you use, Dreamweaver, Notepad or any editor that shows you the source code for your pages is just fine.
Load your main page (usually called index.htm or index.html) into your editor and scroll down to the bottom of the source code page
You should see </body> followed by </html>
Click on the source code and move the cursor so that it is just before the </body>
Right click your mouse and select Paste
The code that you previously Copied should now be inserted just before your </body>
If it isn't and you don't know how to fix it you really need to talk to a webmaster who can do it for you.
Step 3
Assuming that you've Pasted the code ok, save the page and then upload/publish it to your website.
If you don't know how to upload/publish your updated pages you need to get a webmaster who can
InterTracker will now record all hits to that page :)
These steps can be used for all of the pages you wish to track.
If you have pages that are frame based see the notes below.
Notes:
The reason you want the InterTracker code on your main page is because it is the main entry point for most of your visitors.
If you want to see the 'Search Terms' for your site, the main page is the best place to have the InterTracker code installed.
Your main page isn't always the entry point but it certainly is the most common.
If your main page is a frameset...
Several Search Engines will not index your site if the main page is a frameset.
It's your call on the design of your site, but you should be aware of this.
If the page you have installed the InterTracker code into is called from a frameset, the referring page will show up as that framset page and not the originating link.
Consider having a main page that links to your frameset page - this way you cover your bases.
